Web Scraper and Web Macros FAQs

Web Scraper 5.5 and above uses larger database, SQL2k5 express, instead of the SQL 2000 MSDE. This allows you extract fields over 8000 characters into varchar(max) column types. Other features included are dataset within dataset and auto-update.

Instructions to upgrade:

If you wish to backup your packages and datapages:
  • and ARE able to open Web Scraper:
    • Open Web Scraper Plus+ and export all packages you wish to keep by dragging over them and hitting right click -> export.
    • All datapages contained in packages were exported with the pacakges. To export datapages not referenced within packages, hightlight them and right click -> export.
  • and cannot open Web Scraper:
    • Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services and stop the MSSQL$PROVIDUSSTD service.
    • Locate the .mdf and .ldf files for the databases in C:\Program Files\Web Scraper Plus+\Data similar.
    • Copy them into another folder, i.e. C:\PackagesBackup so that you can attach them later.

If you have SQL databases you wish to keep:
  1. Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services and stop the MSSQL$PROVIDUSSTD service.
  2. Locate the .mdf and .ldf files for the databases in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$PROVIDUSSTD\Data or somewhere similar.
  3. Copy them into another folder, i.e. C:\Databases so that you can attach them later.

To upgrade:
  1. Uninstall Web Scraper Plus+
  2. Uninstall all references to MSDE in Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs
  3. Go to Start -> Run -> Regedit:
    1. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Microsoft -> Microsoft SQL Server
    2. Double click InstalledInstances and remove "PROVIDUSSTD" if its in the list that comes up.
    3. In the left pane, under Microsoft SQL Server, delete the PROVIDUSSTD folder.
  4. Download and install the latest version of Web Scraper Plus+(Trial and Full Version) on our downloads page
  5. If you have issues, refer here.
  6. Then open Web Scraper Plus+ import any packages and datapages you exported earlier.
  7. If you copied your database mdf and ldf files, do the following to restore them:
    1. Download and install Sql Management Studio if you don't already have it.
    2. Connect to the .\PROVIDUSSTD server instance with SQL Server authentication, username: sa password: velocityscape
    3. Expand the PROVIDUSSTD instance in the left pane (Object Explorer) and right click databases -> attach.
    4. Locate the mdf files in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$PROVIDUSSTD\Data or if not there, where you backed them up.
